Sunsets are amazing, a mixture of colors and shapes, light and clouds and horizon. I’ve always thought of them as a reminder of God’s unlimited artistic skill.
There is one particular sunset that has always stayed with me. It was July 4th of 1980. I had just come to the Lord so I think my senses were particularly in tune. I was stationed at Coast Guard Station Neah Bay. It’s a particularly stunning part of Washington’s northern coast. On the station we had a good many expired pyrotechnics on hand and the officer-in-charge had gained permission to “dispose” of them. They would be our fireworks for Independence Day and they turned out to be spectacular.
One small disappointment was that we had to, for reasons I don’t recall, set them off before sunset. Not long after we lit off the last flare, the sun set. It was the most amazing display of color and light that I have ever seen, I think the entire village population stood silently on the beach. It was by every definition of the word, awesome. Our own efforts at a “fireworks” display gave way to the indescribeable.
God’s handiwork. His artistry displayed. His delight in beauty made evident, and His power.
Over the years a new appreciation for sunsets has grown inside of me. I have come to realize that a sunset isn’t a thing, as we often speak of it. We say, “last night there was a beautiful sunset,” as if that was “it.” But sunsets don’t really end, because a few hundred miles to the west of wherever we are someone else is just starting to experience it. So the sunset is a continually happening, continually changing, continually awe-inspiring process. It is the ongoing evidence of the power and goodness and artistic character of our Savior. It is a reminder to us of the One Who has saved us, Who lives within us, and fills our everyday.

So when that wonderful feeling we get as the sun goes down begins to fade, and the flicker of disappointment begins as we think “it’s over now” should instead be, “Oh wow, He is blessing someone else with His goodness right now, perhaps in a way that reminds them of just how good He is.”
We should also remember that His goodness “endures forever.” Tomorrow the sun will rise again, and in the evening it will set. We will get to see His goodness on display all over again.
